President's Message

08/11/15

On July 26th Chicago Chapter members Brian Bacon, David Binz, George Collins, Barton DeLacy, Rich Knitter, Mark Krause, Mike Maglocci, Joseph Magdziarz and Kern Slucter attended the Regional Meetings in Dallas.  The following report was filed by Dave Binz:

Joint Meeting Highlights

The State of the Appraisal Institute:

President Lance Coyle, MAI, SRA reiterated the need for advisors at the Chapter level and updated the group regarding Candidates who did not meet there 2014 minimum progress had their categories updated to Practicing Affiliate.
Vice President Scott Robinson MAI, SRA, AI-GRS updated the group on the valuation profession. He noted appraiser numbers are still declining, but AI’s market share has remained steady (26% of all appraisers, 50% of general licenses, 10% of residential licenses). Capstone is successful, with five offerings in 2016.

Immediate Past President Ken Wilson, MAI, SRA, provided updates regarding professional resources. One item of note is AI’s updated “Find an Appraiser” feature, offering a special search function for SBA Going Concern Appraisers.

The Appraisal Foundation Update:

President Coyle, MAI, SRA, gave detailed timeline of the relationship between AI and TAF, from the late 1980’s to current day. This was eye opening to many, and very well received, clearing up many questions regarding the strained relationship between AI and TAF. He also addressed the lack of communication between the National Board and AI Members regarding the relationship and stated they are working on making things more transparent, however, this may not always be possible due to many conversations taking place in executive session.

The three items in the 45 day notice were discussed, to be voted on in the Regional meetings to follow.

The PAC contributions are $31,000 year-to-date, helping obtain much needed meetings in DC.

Region Meeting Highlights:

The 45 day notice passed with no objections.

A motion was made to rescind the motion for AI to re-join TAF as a sponsor from the 04/25/2015 regional meeting in Milwaukee per additional information provided by President Coyle, MAI, SRA during the Joint Meetings. The motion passed.

The nominating committee presented three members for vote of the Third Director, Steve Stiloski, MAI from the Wisconsin chapter received over 50% of the vote. Joe Magdziarz, MAI, SRA ran unopposed for the National Nominating Committee. Ron DeVries, MAI, SRA ran unopposed as a National Nominating Committee Alternate.

In addition to Dave’s comments, I would also add the following notes:

The total number of practicing appraisers is estimated to have declined from 80,000 last year to 78,000 in 2015.

A record number of more than 950 new designations were awarded in 2014. AI projects that 2015 is on pace to match that. However, they expect the pace of new designations to slow dramatically in the next few years.

Education revenue is down 5 percent nationally in 2015 compared to 2014.
